The fall of the ink and the aspect of the ground form the imprint of this vertical earth which captures from the mountain its vertigo and its fall, its geological time and its limitless space.<\/p>\n
The realization of the canvas is as fast as the fall of a dozen meters that put a few drops of coal mixed with water.<\/p>\n
Before being a work of art, Ecotopia was a series of walks, alone or with friends, through the mountains. Nights spent living in nature, under the stars, warmed by a campfire.<\/p>\n
Cliffs climbed for hours on end, only to have an ink jet cover a canvas below in a few seconds.<\/p>\n
Except for the linen canvas itself, the materials that make it up come from walking, the ink is created after nights spent outside, with the crushed ashes of the wood fire, to which is added a sap serving as a binder.<\/p>\n
The fertile mountain gives birth to the substrate which is deposited on the canvas, the wood which grows on it becomes charcoal, then ink.<\/p>\n

Annapurna<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

The first Ecotopia walk and<\/span> not<\/span> the least,<\/span> took<\/span> place in 2016 in Nepal,<\/span> during a<\/span> solitary walk around the Annapurna range, the second massif of the Himalayas.<\/span><\/p>\n
After several days of preparation in the city of Phokara, I finally found the necessary elements to create the canvas at the top of Thorong Pass<\/span> : The linen cloth itself, a mortar, a sieve to crush the coal and of course the equipment necessary for a trek in the high mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n
15 days of walking<\/span> in<\/span> the heart of the mountains, the canvases in the bag, the evening heated by a wood fire, the next morning<\/span> we crushed * (you speak of a solitary walk but here you speak in the plural)<\/span> the coal to make the ink.<\/span> <\/p>\n
A thousand<\/span> cliffs, waterfalls, encounters<\/span> took place<\/span> during<\/span> this walk,<\/span> this fact (?)<\/span> will be counted in another book.<\/span><\/p>\n
On the tenth day, I arrived<\/span> at the basecamps<\/span> from the Thorong pass, at 4500m. 1000 meters me <\/span>still separated<\/span> from the pass at 5500m, the day was to be 8 hours of walking, with about 50% oxygen<\/span> ,<\/span> each step<\/span> was<\/span> a test and an enjoyment at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n
To add difficulty to this trying walk, this funny idea of climbing the highest<\/span> point (?)<\/span> that I found to<\/span> throw<\/span> this coal mixed with a little water.<\/span> <\/p>\n
The group of friends that I joined for two or three days could<\/span> n’t<\/span> wait for me, afraid of arriving during the night, or<\/span> of<\/span> being blocked at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n
I had already been carrying this canvas and jars of powdered charcoal with me for 10 days, I couldn’t give up here.<\/span><\/p>\n
Slightly above the High camp around 5000m, after already 2 long hours of walking, I saw a cliff which overhung the whole valley.<\/span><\/p>\n
The canvas deposited under the cliff, I climb this big rock as best I can. A few snowflakes begin<\/span>nt to<\/span> fall, the first since the start of the trek, is the mountain trying to speak<\/span> ?<\/span><\/p>\n
Annapurna is for the Nepalese the residence of Shiva. It has often pleased me to<\/span> to think<\/span> that these canvases<\/span> captured some<\/span> fragments of Shiva herself.<\/span><\/p>\n
Balanced in the void, alone for miles around, not without difficulty I managed to throw<\/span> this<\/span> ink.<\/span> <\/p>\n
There is often in<\/span> my feelings<\/span> an \u201call that for that\u201d. Here is an inkblot that I will have<\/span>s<\/span> been able to do in my living room 10,000 kilometers from here.<\/span><\/p>\n
But it is something more than a mere stain in an assembled order<\/span> th<\/span> what this web contains. It’s even more than my journey, <\/span> my walking, my climbing, my performance, is something other than my own singularities, my sensitivity and my style. It’s something other than me.<\/span><\/p>\n
I am a simple pretext, the sherpa of the mountain, who<\/span> brought<\/span> her her canvas and her ink so that she could draw herself, tell us all about<\/span> it through<\/span> her drawing.<\/span><\/p>\n
I delicately fold the canvases, and continue the trip under the snow.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Alps<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Ecotopia continued in France through<\/span> mountain<\/span> climbing in the Mercantour massif and in the<\/span> no less perilous southern<\/span> pre-<\/span> Alps<\/span> .<\/span><\/p>\n
Vision of the sublime in Kant, the mountain exceeds the capacity of the human mind to think it, to represent it. This is how the artist’s gesture disappears to let its formal singularities express themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n
In a meditative Zen momentum, it recalls the approach of calligraphers who seek in their gesture the feeling of emptiness.<\/span><\/p>\n
Performative conquest of a summit, the paintings of Ecotopia become a strong synthesis between walking in nature, climbing cliffs and the mountain itself.<\/span><\/p>\n
There are many places among these mountains that I name Ateliers, not to consider them<\/span> as<\/span> places where the artist masters the process of producing<\/span> his<\/span> works, but much more as places where the mountain works, works day after day. Myself I just pass<\/span>er<\/span> , return, y<\/span> <\/span> live a few days.<\/span><\/p>\n
Again \u201cI\u201d am a pretext, a tool that nature uses as it sees<\/span> fit to produce its<\/span> works.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sea<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

At the end of the mountains, the sea, in 2019<\/span> <\/span> Ecotopia always seeks to make nature speak for itself, and continues to explore the rocky shores, the edge between<\/span> land and<\/span> sea. With a gesture similar to that of the mountain, a jet of ink from a vertical point on a canvas placed on the bank flows and takes its imprint.<\/span><\/p>\n
The sea in turn<\/span> , which<\/span> comes to the rhythm of the waves, participates<\/span> in<\/span> the design of the shore, covers it,<\/span> dilutes<\/span> it, sometimes violently, the canvas becomes this collaboration between land and sea.<\/span><\/p>\n
In each canvas,<\/span> all that remains of the artist is his walking body<\/span>, penetrated by the surrounding nature. The canvas is in a way its withdrawal, its disappearance. These choices seem important, this or that mountain<\/span>,<\/span> such and such shores, but they are nothing. It is the mountain, the shore and the sea that draw, the artists withdraw from the outpost of their works, not participating<\/span>,<\/span> just like the viewer, only in<\/span> that<\/span> they recognize themselves in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n
Pareidolia, coincidence, the first of these canvases inexorably let<\/span> appear<\/span> the drawing of a wave.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the technique can precisely make one think of dripping, throwing ink on a canvas, it differs, even opposes as to what the work captures. <\/span><\/p>\n
While the drippings capture the energy of the author, his dynamism, his presence, Ecotopia<\/span> is<\/span> more of a withdrawal, to leave room for the environment.<\/span> If traces<\/span> of gesture appear, they are only residual.<\/span><\/p>\n
Modern art has brought to its climax the advent of the individual, his own qualities, his difference, his ego. Even the <\/span>Land Art<\/span> of the 70s<\/span> is no<\/span> exception, the man in nature, the man who sculpts nature.<\/span><\/p>\n
The individual is what we try to go<\/span> beyond<\/span>, and our strategy is nature. What Ecotopia does is to consider the body acting no longer as an individual having these singularities<\/span>s<\/span> and mode of expression<\/span> s<\/span> proper<\/span> s<\/span> , but as part of a whole, the bodies are in a natural environment<\/span> , they<\/span> become an integral part of it.<\/span><\/p>\n
The second challenge of<\/span> this<\/span> going beyond is the collective, ecology without the collective stumbles.<\/span> This<\/span> is what Ecotopia is turning to, and what it<\/span> will try<\/span> to build now.<\/span><\/p>\n
