{"id":91578,"date":"2024-02-03T09:46:36","date_gmt":"2024-02-03T09:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sine-fine.com\/project\/under-the-ice-the-water-savings-bank-february-1-2020-to-august-29-2020\/"},"modified":"2024-02-03T09:46:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-03T09:46:36","slug":"under-the-ice-the-water-savings-bank-february-1-2020-to-august-29-2020","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/sine-fine.com\/en\/project\/under-the-ice-the-water-savings-bank-february-1-2020-to-august-29-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Under the Ice the Water &#8211; Savings Bank &#8211; February 1, 2020 to August 29, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The day money disappears<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Prelude<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Le jour o\u00f9 l&#8217;argent dispara\u00eetra (The day when money disappears), this phrase emerged during a collective discussion, near a refuge, in the middle of snow-covered nature<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span>night falling, wrapped in blankets, warming ourselves around a fire<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The next day<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span>we were going to make the money disappear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The next day, going deeper into the high mountains, our steps reached a frozen lake: under the snow, ice, under the ice, water<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Positioning itself in the vanguard, exploring, ensuring the field, questioning us both metaphorically and literally, on the question of the suppression of capital that structures our societies and our human relationships<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Like a ritual act, a symbolic atonement embodied in a system at the end of its tether, deep in the wilderness<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span>we joyfully prepare for the day when<span class=\"s2\">money<\/span>disappears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">This was not our first nature walk, as last year&#8217;s Azimuth exhibition had already set us off for another mountain valley<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Once again, with snowshoes on our feet and 15 kg of Nordic gold on our backs, we left<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> This time, the expedition<span class=\"s2\">is<\/span>motivated by: Under the ice, the water,<span class=\"s2\">an<\/span>exhibition in production at the Caisse d&#8217;<span class=\"s2\">\u00c9pargne<\/span>de Nice Mass\u00e9na. An exposure in a bank? Strange you say&#8230;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Certainly, and that&#8217;s why Palam was faced with a difficult choice when he was offered this location<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> There is some<span class=\"s2\">&#8216;<\/span>on the one hand, recognition as a group of<span class=\"s2\">&#8216;<\/span>part of the<span class=\"s2\">&#8216;<\/span>local cultural institution, the<span class=\"s2\">&#8216;<\/span>access to a production budget, central visibility in local life, and a means of reaching a different audience than the one the<span class=\"s2\">&#8216;<\/span>we meet most of the time in the current circles of contemporary art. And on<span class=\"s2\">the<\/span>other hand, a difficult location, unsuited to exhibition, marked by the symbolic charge of a bank and the values involved<span class=\"s2\">in<\/span>exhibiting<span class=\"s2\">indoors<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">But, we were told, there is no neutral space<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> An institution, a museum, a gallery<span class=\"s3\"> <\/span>: same fight ?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Should art disregard the conditions of monstration or,<span class=\"s2\">on<\/span>the contrary, attach importance to questioning them<span class=\"s2\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">So we decided to accept<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span>with a view to questioning in depth<span class=\"s2\">the<\/span>framework in which the exhibition originated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Palam has demonstrated its sensitivity to the ecological cause on several occasions in the past, and far from being an affectation, it is part of the collective&#8217;s DNA. And to prevent it from being relegated to an ancillary role, we<span class=\"s2\">had<\/span>to examine the bank&#8217;s<span class=\"s2\">relationship<\/span>with ecology in its day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Is subsidizing artists who talk about ecology enough to make oneself an ecological institution? Especially when, moreover, it subsidizes fossil fuels much more?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">We had carte blanche for this exhibition. And we can only thank the bank for this allowed freedom. Without her, the protest could not have taken place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">In this context, we have the preposterous idea that there is a link between banks and capitalism, a cause-and-effect relationship between capitalism and the ecological-social emergency<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> We&#8217;ve decided to use the bank&#8217;s capital as a plastic material, and its literal and symbolic destruction as a means of artistic expression<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">At the first Palam meeting of the expo, two questions quickly emerged:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">We didn&#8217;t want to decorate a waiting room, and it seemed impossible to question the ecology of these walls<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> Therefore, a simple question arises: &#8220;How to escape from<span class=\"s2\">the<\/span>place? &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Through our previous projects, we have distinguished ourselves with mountainous walks. This time, the idea<span class=\"s2\">of<\/span>taking the visitor out of the bank and even out of the city is imposed<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Our second thought<span class=\"s2\">:<\/span>What would be the most ecological way to use the budget<span class=\"s2\">?<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Degrowth&#8221;<span class=\"s2\">in<\/span>mind&#8230; allusions to &#8220;the carbon footprint&#8221;&#8230; &#8220;the circulation of money, all that&#8230;&#8221;<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> We concluded that the destruction of money was perhaps the most ecologically powerful act of all<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> Have we finally brought the debate to a conclusion?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">It seemed like we were heading down a critical path. Self-censorship makes us mince our<span class=\"s2\">words<\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Degrowth, anti-capitalism in a bank<span class=\"s2\">:<\/span>Expected? Easy ? Necessary ? We will strive to be relevant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">All in all,<span class=\"s2\">the<\/span>brainstorm was launched<span class=\"s2\">,<\/span>not everything can be revealed here. What you can remember is that at the beginning of January we went for a walk in the heart of the Mercantour to hide a secret<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> The Under the Ice, the Water exhibition provides clues, like a treasure hunt<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> Bringing the visitor out of the partitioning space of the bank, and the urban saturation<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Far from looking for a simple object, the quest is to understand its nature, to understand the meaning of this act, the induced questions as poetic as political<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">In the refuge it was cold, the dormitory was not heated, 2 meters of snow on the roof protected us somewhat from the freezing night, 6 blankets for some, a Northface duvet resistant to -40 for the others, the night was difficult, you can imagine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">Art is like a societal experiment, aiming at clearing, opening the paths that humanity will be able to take<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span> In the vanguard, our group gropes, assures, explores the ground of a meeting between nature, collective, and post-capitalist society<span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">We&#8217;ll leave you here for now, but come back soon with
